Shelley Castle Artist
Shelley Castle works across mediums and through collaboration with people from different sectors of life, including horologists, farmers, entomologists and dancers. She's interested in the absurd, cultural identity, notions of beauty, and 'othered' (that which has been marginalised through cultural narratives). Currently working on the Flete Estate in South Devon where she is artist in residence, she explores our relationship to that 'other' thing nature, through moving image, photography, walks and installations. She works with local groups on collabroative projects with organisations such as the Real Ideas Organisation and Aune Head Arts and has led a variety of workshops and food salons from her studio, a Victorian Game Larder based on the Flete Estate near Holbeton. At the heart of her practice is a desire to explore the beauty of the everday and the substratum of chaos that runs under it, whilst striving to do so in as sustainable way as possible. Recent work includes a series of paintings about birds, entitled 'We Sing in Colour', made in oil on gesso with recycled materials.
