Sarah Lucy Baker Sarah Lucy Baker : Artist
I create sculptural paintings; 3 dimensional natural forms on canvas which are inspired by a cocktail of fairytales, folklore and the Dartmoor landscape. I aim to create a tactile and visual feast that instantly engages its audience. Though edgy and experimental there is a distinct crafts focus to my practice; I utilise Scenic Artist’s and Prop maker’s materials including glazes, textures and fabrics to create work which is theatrical and uplifting. Embracing traditional feminine imagery such as floral and natural forms I then add a twist of the unexpected such as a harsh texture or bleached colour to play against the sentimentality of the image.
With a background as a Scenic Artist for Theatre I am influenced by how both dramatic gesture and subtle imagery can create narrative, aiming to share experiences with the viewer and involve the senses directly rather than simply presenting an image or painting. In order to heighten experience in my work I direct the focus on texture, using glazes and tactile pattern to create interest while utilising a neutral palette I have had the opportunity to paint for a wide range of Theatre shows and events for both large scale venues such as from The English National Opera (La Boheme) and at the RSC, to Studio theatres such as the BAC, work for company The Opera Engine and most recently painting the CIAO Ark for INevents . Additionally I have been involved with various Pantomimes, education projects and events from mural painting in the windows of The Conran Shop (South Kensington) to being a workshop leader at the Central School of Speech and Drama Summer School. I utilize the materials and techniques I have used as a Scenic in my Fine Art practice to bring a unique, theatrical and ethereal dynamic to my work.
Ultimately I want to create a positive, uplifting experience for the viewer. My aim is therefore to create work which constantly pushes the boundaries of what is technically possible while retaining a strong sense of beauty and purpose.
