Doug King-Smith sculpture, woodland, hillyfield, mongolian overtone singing
Doug King-Smith: Self-employed artist.
I am a Sculptor and Woodsman.
Having studied anthropology at university, my life passion is to explore and encourage sustainability and community.
I moved to Devon in 2006 and in 2007 set up 'The Woodshed', a community artspace at Bowden House in Totnes. I now run a woodland project on Dartmoor called 'The Hillyfied'. During the winter months I organise 'Acoustic Haven' at St. John's Church Bridgetown, Totnes - a one-of-its-kind, top-quality community run live music night.
At The Hillyfield, a 44acre woodland on the periphery of Dartmoor National Park we engage volunteers in the active management of the land. We also host community events throughout the year.
I have also had lots of experience running workshops in schools including Mongolian Overtone Singing, Didgeridoo making and playing, Juggling workshops (making balls & juggling) and a variety of wood-scultpture workshops including bench making & carving.
Sculpture
I make sculptures from wood using a chainsaw, inspired by nature and a deep appreciation of wood. I have exhibited throughout the country although currently most of my work is made to commission. I have worked closely with Grand Design Award Winners 'Earthed' and have work on permanent display at Slimbridge Waterfowl Trust, High Heathercombe Sculture Trail on Dartmoor & a few other venues. In 2010 I was invited to go to Japan, where I spent a month as resident sculptor wtih the Harmony Centre. Here I prepared 9 sculptures for exhibition. The following year I was invited back to Japan to exhibit at the Shinoki Cultural Centre in Kanazawa close to Kyoto. Hillyfield Woodland (close to South Brent)
This is a very special spot of land on Dartmoor National Park close to South Brent which we manage as a woodland farm. Volunteer weekends take place on the 2nd weekend of the month. There are many opportunities to come and help work on the land.

Acoustic Music Events
Since 1999 I have managed a variety of art spaces including the 491 Gallery in London, Festival of Flight, and Peace Not War.
Since moving to Totnes I have helped coordinate an intimate and inspiring music night called 'Acoustic Haven' at St John's Church Bridgetown. An amazing setting for artists and audience alike. Check the facebook group 'Acoustic Haven'. It usually happens last Friday of the month from 6pm during the darker months and is run entirely by volunteers.
Mongolian Overtone Singing Tuition.
I am a teacher of Khoomii, a unique style of singing traditional to Mongolia and Tuva, where you can sing two notes at the same time. For workshops and more information please get in touch. I have taught over 2000 people to sing overtones, & performed throughout the country.
