Remembrance Sunday is perhaps a fitting occasion to perform one of the world's most loved oratorios, Dvorak's hauntingly beautiful Stabat Mater. This choral piece takes its audience through sadness and ends on a hopeful note, reflecting a world emerging from the ordeal of the pandemic.

Composed at a time of extreme personal grief it is based on a well-known mediaeval Latin poem relating the suffering of Mary mother of Christ as she stood by the cross. This is a profound piece of music in which Dvorak's vision combines both delicacy and extremes of passion, both gentle lyricism and the full power of voices and orchestra.
