Amanda Duke Art and Textiles Workshops
Amanda completed her Fine Art degree at Goldsmiths College of Art and followed with a
PGCE at Brighton University. She has over thirty years experience as a ‘driven’ leader of outstanding secondary school art departments in a range of schools in the South East. In recent years she has project managed a series of successful creative textile projects in a community and adult setting and through this discovered another huge world of eager learners beyond the school gates. Amanda reduced her teaching to part time so that she could immerse herself in her own personal work and teach adult workshops and courses. She still teaches at Steyning Grammar as she loves the interaction with young people, their boundless energy and enthusiasm has always been an inspiration to Amanda. More recent adventures into teaching adults has proved to be equally exciting and Amanda just loves to work with people who get a buzz out of learning new things.
Whilst trained as a Fine Artist, Amanda is drawn to working with fabric and stitch. During the past eighteen months she has been researching and practicing shibori, exploring and experimenting with resist dye techniques, sashiko hand embroidery and Boro ‘make do and mend’ approaches. She can usually be found surrounded by piles of fabric, dye buckets and cottons. Exploring pattern, texture and abstract qualities in structured and intuitive shibori resist techniques takes her to the visual language she identifies most closely with. She is searching through the archeology found in stitching and collecting her investigations and samples ready to pursue further in printmaking, painting and drawing over the coming months. Amanda takes great joy in responding to the predictable and accidental surprises found in imagery as it occurs. Message Amanda if you would like details of future courses .
