Young People's Puppet Theatre

Young People's Puppet Theatre Young People's Puppet Theatre

The Young People’s Puppet Theatre is an educational charity which brings large-scale year-long puppetry projects into schools. Our projects include making marionettes, designing and making scenery and props and then putting together a technically demanding production. Performances are presented on the YPPT’s high tech stage which has been designed and built by Brilliant Stages, a local company of international stature which builds touring stages for the world’s most famous rock and pop superstars.

Our typical project at the moment is with Year 6 classes. The projects start in September, with each member of the class designing and making a fully-articulated 9-string marionette. After Christmas, the class collaborates on set designing and building, and then each child takes a part in the final show, with roles including puppeteering, voices, scene changing, lights and sound. All projects are led by a YPPT-approved project leader, who comes in to the school for every session.

Puppetry is a particularly good form of theatre for school students because it incorporates art, drama, performance and backstage skills, as well as a host of social skills, the most notable of which is the development of teamwork. We find this to be of particular benefit to Year 6 students in preparation for the transfer to secondary school.

We are always looking to recruit new scriptwriters, project leaders and schools to host our projects - get in touch or have a look at our website for more information!
