Torbay Jubilee Choir Torbay Jubilee Choir
Torbay Jubilee Choir was formed in 2012 in response for a request from Torbay Council for a choir to sing at the Civic Jubilee Service. The initial event was very successful, and many of the choir asked if it could continue. We are delighted not only to be able to continue, but to be supported by Torbay Council, and hope to be able to perform at more civic events in the future as well as other events.
The choir consists of local singers and musicians who come together for individual events. Many of them are also members of some of the more established choirs in the bay. The Musical Director for the choir is Jane Anderson-Brown.
Since its formation, the choir has sung in a concert of music for remembrance at Oldway Mansion, and has a number of bookings already for 2013 including the Holocaust Memorial Service in Brixham in January, and a Palm Sunday event at Galmpton Barn Chapel in March.
Our music is mixed, including anthems and other sacred music, part songs, folk, classical and standards. Where possible, we like to rehearse without accompaniment, but we have worked with organ, piano and a concert band in performance as well as singing a capella.
Membership to the choir is open to all aged 16 or over who would like to join, although numbers may be limited if we are singing in a small venue. The aim of the choir is to be an occasional choir which comes together as required, and singers are asked to pay a participation fee for each event they sign up to (usually £5 or £10).
Rehearsal nights vary, and singers will be advised of planned rehearsals before they sign up for an event. The aim of varying rehearsal nights is so that those singers who also belong to a regular choir do not have to miss many rehearsals of their other choir. Singers in the Jubilee Choir are expected to attend a minimum number of rehearsals to ensure they are comfortable with the music.
Singers are expected to be able to learn music independently. Access to music and to recordings are provided as far as possible, so sight-reading skills are not necessary.
