In June 2009, Tehran-born journalist, Maziar Bahari, was dispatched by Newsweek magazine to cover Iran’s presidential election, in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faced reformist challenger, Mir Hossein Mousavi. Accused of being an agent for foreign intelligence organizations, he was thrown into the Evin Prison, where he was interrogated and beaten for 118 days. Based on Bahari’s memoir, Rosewater marks the screenwriting & directorial debut of The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, whose prior tongue-in-cheek interview with
Bahari was used as evidence against him.
