Isabel Coulton is an accomplished artist, woodcarver and stone carver. Currently working on a large commission for Buckfast Abbey. Isabel has been living and teaching life drawing in Devon for many years. Her mother, Lydia Corbett, is an exhibiting artist, ceramicist and painter. In the 1950s Lydia sat as a model for Picasso and became the Girl with A Ponytail.
One of the first artists that Dorothy Elmhirst invited to Dartington in 1926 was the outstanding potter Bernard Leach. Leach’s former assistant Sylvia Fox-Strangways installed a kiln at Dartington and organised life drawing classes as she felt it was her duty to bring art to everyone on the estate from ‘children to bricklayers’.
