The Great Create Festival of the Arts at Greenway
The award winning Great Create Festival of the Arts, now in its sixth year, showcases exceptional contemporary art in all formats from Southwest artists. This prestigious exhibition, founded and directed by local artist Emma Carter, is hosted by the National Trust at Greenway. This glorious woodland estate on the river Dart was once the holiday home of Agatha Christie. The house was opened following a major restoration project, making it a popular destination for local and visitors alike.
The Great Create 2012 portfolio will reflect each artists' current practice and the show provides a much needed platform for emerging and established artists to try out new and exciting work, whilst being exhibited in galleries and gardens and attracting a wide audience.
A ‘Poets Picnic ‘and ‘Open mic’ on Friday 10 August at 6 - 8 pm will see charming and witty established poets such as Maggie Butt and Suzy Miles read on the lawn at Greenway. Guests are invited to read their own works, for both beginners and established poets. Ella Porter Brentford will provide beautiful soulful musical accompaniment. Bring your own picnic and if the weather is inclement the event will be in the yurt. This is a great chance to experience poetry at its best. Free, accessible and enjoyable!
To compliment the poetry picnic we are also offering an Interactive poetry workshop - ‘The View From Here’ an event that is sponsored by the Torbay Poetry Festival, and the Arts Council on 10th August 3 - 5pm.This writing workshop uses the beautiful natural surroundings of Greenway as a backdrop to exploration of the differing perceptions of a local and an outsider. It uses examples of published writing and practical exercises to develop vivid description which also subtly conveys inner states. This workshop is suitable for poets, playwrights and prose writers. Aspiring and experienced writers are invited to bring pens and paper (or fingers and keyboards) to explore craft and take time to write. The group will be led by Maggie Butt, who will offer her expertise to enable the group to produce new writing. Poetry will then be curated to form a ‘Poet-tree’ installation at The Great Create that takes place throughout August. £12 per participant or £5 to National Trust members (includes admission to Greenway house and garden). Please book early as space is limited 01803 843235. Please come earlier if you wish to see whole estate, have lunch and see the galleries!
All artwork will be for sale!
NT admission applies at all times except for NT members
