ART, Design & Your Garden

This is the seventh year for The Garden Show in Spring this Easter at Firle Place – The perfect time and place to plot and plan for the year ahead: specialist growers guiding one to the right plant for your garden and the right place in the garden to plant. Plenty of garden related gifts, artisan work, craft and home products, garden furniture, sundries and the most delicious country foods. Firle Arts & Craft Market will again be held in the beautiful Old Georgian Riding School showcasing local art and design work. Plans are underway for the popular Easter Flower Festival in St Peters Church and daily talks by the vicar, Peter Owen Jones.

Plant Doctors, Steve & Val Bradley, will be on hand to help solve varied gardening problems to help your garden grow.

Enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to visit the 20 acre Pleasure Grounds, a woodland garden dating back to the eighteenth century and explore ‘The Secret Gardens of Firle Place’ being restored by the Firle garden team. Philip Fenech, Head Gardener, will be conducting two tours daily and with enthusiasm explaining the techniques and skills needed to develop ‘The Pleasure Grounds’ in the spirit of the original ‘Cabinets de Verde’, hidden woodland glades, with different planting themes in each area in this very special and beautiful garden in the lost valley of The Sussex Downs.

Firle House will be open again after 3 years of major renovations and the recently restored and fascinating Firle Place Herb Garden will give visitors a chance to see the rejuvenation and growth that has burgeoned over the past two years. The Herb Garden is a tranquil haven set in part of the 18th century walled gardens. Lady Gage, who has a long interest in the medical uses of herbs, began work on the design and structure of the garden just over a year ago and Gardener, William Vincent, has taken this vision and transformed the tumble down, weed strewn, paddock area of the walled garden into a series of perfectly proportioned beds, grass paths and greengage tree-lined central avenue. The garden is a work in progress but is proving of great aesthetic and horticultural interest with a number of garden products planned; ‘tisanes’ teas and medicinal bath soaks.

There are plenty of activities on site to keep all the family occupied. Easter Egg Hunts in the Churchyard’ face painting, the funfair, jester juggling, storytelling, puppet and magic shows. The Wandering Jazz Trio will wander the gardens delighting all with their evocative songs and music whilst on Saturday and Sunday Huxley Birds of Prey will thrill the crowds. All this and so much more.
A great day out for the whole family. Life is good in your Garden!
