The REal Dido (Opera by Henry Purcell)
It is the beginning of the 20th Century and the onset of war is looming. As the nightlife of London comes out to play, a fatalistic affair of the heart ignites, as all the city around them burns.
The revolutionary war weapons of the 1941 Blitzkreig ferociously burst the safe yet bleak bubble within which we find Dido, Aeneas, Belinda and the staff and patrons of Club Carthage, a grimy London music hall in the midst of a city ablaze with war.
This brand new reimagining of the first truly English opera by Henry Purcell takes the drama of the 17th century stage and places is it firmly into the heart of a conflict that defined the century that would follow it. With a baroque ensemble and condensed cast, the production thrives on site-specific commissions, including Fishbourne Roman Palace and Portsmouth’s HMS Warrior. A not-to-be-missed interpretation, the performance will also be followed by a post-show talk with the creative team and the company
