Renaissance Art: Works In Detail (online course)
Come and discuss Italian Renaissance art in this informal, welcoming, online course. Talk to other students and develop your understanding and appreciation of this much revered aspect of art history whilst critically analysing selected artworks. We will explore key artworks in detail, beginning with Botticelli's La Primavera, comparing with contemporary works, discussing contemporary writing, exploring techniques, subject matter and symbology whilst considering the context and purpose of production, including the influence of patronage and the artist's development. From here we will select further works to explore in detail and draw comparisons and contrasts among selected works, establishing artistic characteristics, themes and influences common in the Italian Renaissance, as well as establishing where artists' work differs. We will also consider wider responses, including how the wider appreciation of certain works has changed over time.
