The Tempest

The Tempest

Dartington Playgoers Present The Tempest by William Shakespare
Directed by Gaelle Stark-Ordish

The Island. A place of beauty, magic and music, almost entirely inhabited by spirits, where Prospero is the self-styled lord. The islanders are at the mercy of his moods, which are quick to change. Miranda his daughter is brave and strong. She alone will stand up to her father. Mysterious humans from the west arrive; these foreigners are confident and brash, using alcohol as a means of escape. The islanders immediately sense that these strangers are not trustworthy. Caliban is Prospero's slave, cunning and savage, he believes that he can use some of these outsiders to commit murder for his own gains.
However Prospero, helped by Ariel, sees all that happens on his island. Only he holds all the pieces of the puzzle...

In this exciting production, of what is believed to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone, director Gaelle Stark-Ordish illuminates the themes of political dominion, social conformity and cultural alternatives which are as relevant today as they were in 1610.
