Collective at the Jerwood Gridshell Space

An invitation: I would like to invite you all to join us for our preview and coffee morning (10 -11.30 am), Thursday 11th September, the launch of our 4 day Collective exhibition at the Jerwood Gridshell space at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.

Collective represents a diverse group of artists linked with West Dean College’s Visual Arts Department, including current students, visiting tutors, alumni and former artists-in-residence at the Jerwood Gridshell space.

The Jerwood Gridshell, completed in 2002, is a unique piece of architecture constructed through a lightweight grid of oak laths, steamed beams creating a latticework that is curved into three connected domes. The building was designed to store the Weald & Downland Museum’s collection of artefacts in the lower deck while the Upper hall used for conservation projects and training, where Collective will be exhibiting. Agriculture, domestic life, various trades, industries and transport are all represented in the museum collection, with a special emphasis on building construction and techniques. This collection, along with the unique architectural space and surroundings provides a rich varied contextual source, a perfect catalyst for the artists involved, working across sculpture and installation, painting, print and tapestry.
