Exeter Poetry Festival 2012 4-7 October
Tickets from Exeter Phoenix Box Office on 01392 667080
Exeter’s Poetry Society stanza, ExCite Poetry, south west literature development agency, Cyprus Well, and the UK’s leading performance poetry organisation, Apples and Snakes have teamed up to deliver Exeter’s third poetry festival this October. With funding from Arts Council England and the Ronald Duncan Literary Foundation this year’s festival offers opportunity to listen to some of the region’s finest poets, such as Fiona Benson, Anthony Wilson, Graham Burchell, and Andy Brown, alongside other well-known visitors.
The festival launches on National Poetry Day, Thursday 4th October, and runs for four days. During this time audiences will have opportunity to listen to readings from prize winning poets such as Don Paterson and Hilary Menos, meet promising new poets from Exeter University’s Creative Writing Department, and take part in a workshop with renowned performance poet and novelist Lucy English.
As part of the festival, Spacex Gallery will be running an art and poetry workshop for 6-11 year olds on Saturday 6th. Children will have the chance to compose a poem, and then make it into a piece of artwork with all kinds of different materials. The finished pieces will be put on display for all to admire.
The festival weekend culminates with Exeter’s Third Poetry Slam, hosted by Grand Bard of Exeter Jackie Juno and the current Bard of Exeter, Jon Freeman. Come and see some of Exeter’s remarkable wordsmiths as they battle it out to win the slam.
This year’s festival venues are: Exeter Central Library, Devon and Exeter Institution, Exeter Phoenix, Spacex Gallery, and the Bike Shed Theatre.
