Tudor costume display

Tudor costume display

A set of intricate and beautifully made Tudor costumes are currently on display inside Knebworth House during the 2015 season. The roomsreveal exquisite Tudor gowns, children’s outfits for both rich and poor and a gentleman’s doublet and hose. These carefully constructed, authentic replica costumes are on display with special thanks to three Hertfordshire museums. Visitors young and old will enjoy comparing the costumes with the clothing seen in the wide range of Tudor portraits which decorate the walls of the Banqueting Hall and the Queen Elizabeth room.

One of the highlights of the display will be a pair of costumes on loan from Much Hadham Forge Museum. The Museum commissioned London College of Fashion student and aspiring costume designer, Megan Doyle to recreate the stunning Elizabethan costume worn by one of the mothers in the ‘Judgement of Solomon’ wall painting at the Forge. Megan recently finished working on the second male Tudor costume inspired by the little-known 16th century wall painting.

From March to September, the costume display will bring the heritage of Knebworth House in Elizabethan times to life. It will be particularly popular with school visitors, and especially inspiring for those participating in the Tudor Treasure Trail educational programme.
