Hollicombe Brake

Hollicombe Brake

his contemporary housing regeneration project of the former Hollicombe Gas Works in Torbay looks set to become an exemplar regional development providing 187 dwellings and substantial new areas of public realm and shared space.

This much needed brownfield site project sits upon a former gas works, redundant since the 1970’s. Following decontamination, Hollicombe Brake will comprise 187 one, two and three-bed apartments across four buildings of up to six storeys, a community facility to build cohesion and a hectare of new public open space linking the countryside to the sea. Each apartment also has the use of semi-private communal gardens.

The buildings respect the site’s industrial heritage and are arranged to encourage use of the parkland setting both for recreation and access. The palette of materials including red stone facade closely references the local Permian sandstone drawing upon the English Riviera Geopark status. The design also expresses the unique surrounding landscape heritage, whilst drawing on materials of adjacent developments.

An extensive landscaped corridor provides new public open space and reinstates green linkage from the sea to open countryside beyond. To the south of the scheme is proposed a large shared use space.
