Artist's Brief Deadline 01/03/12
'AFFIRMATION'
AFFIRMATIVE ART EXHIBITION
The Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey, The Kings Drive, Torquay, TQ2 5JE.
Saturday 31st March - Sunday 15th April 2012
10 a.m - 5 p.m
As human beings we constantly seek affirmation; from ourselves, loved ones and strangers. It is the mechanism through which we create and utilize life experience, it is no wonder that is such a preoccupation in all its many forms...
Artist's Brief:
The focus for this exhibition will be contemporary Installation based artwork that is multidimensional and engaging. The selected submissions will demonstrate an innovative and critical approach to interpretation of the theme. New artwork is preferable as pre-existing artwork is unlikely to explore the theme comprehensively. Installation Art itself is a broad ranging concept and very open for interpretation. The venue is vast and will accommodate ambitious work. Within the large exhibition space partitions will be constructed and seperate areas created to display the Installations.
In 2011 the comparitive event 'Immersive Worlds' w as extremely successful, it achieved 3628 visitors in 11 days. 'Affirmation' will be open longer and will enjoy both weekends of the Easter Holiday, this means a lot more visitors for 2012! There is no submission fee, artwork is expensive enough to produce! There will be a few satelite events/projects linked to this exhibition. There will be a private view 29/03/12 with entertainment and catering, also there will be a second late opening 14/04/12.
What you need to do for submission:
-Submission emailed to: jamesderwin@hotmail.co.uk
-Submission deadline: 5pm on Thursday 1st March 2012
-Submissions must be an accurate and complete description of the artwork, it must include an artist's statement about the work and its intent.
-Details about the artwork: title, date, media, dimensions and required space, installation or construction requirements (i.e a specially built plinth, housing, lighting, power supply etc)
-Also at least two labelled clear photographs per piece of artwork, one of which must show detail.
-Please if possible provide a link to website or profile where examples of previous work can be viewed.
-Also a brief description of previous art world experience is helpful. Proposals are also welcome, this is to save time and money as artwork is accepted or not accepted.
Proposals should be well executed and consist of a written statement of cost, construction process and time, logistics etc and some form of visualizations. The proposed artwork must be within reason, self supported (e.g. funded and constructed by artist, however limited support is available). If a proposal is accepted but then does not result in work of a satisfactory nature and or for any other reason is not acceptable it is purely up to the discretion of the curator to reject it.
Once your submission has been selected for exhibition you are required to:
-To make sure artwork is delivered to The Spanish Barn, safely wrapped and clearly labelled with title and artis t's name.
-To personally help with construction/installation, stewarding/invigilation, networking and promotion of the exhibition.
-To attend a meeting before exhibition to view the venue, meet fellow artists and discuss how the event is progressing.
-To contribute all the passion and skills you have to make this exhibition a success.
Please note artwork will only be exhibited if it fully complies with current health and safety regulations at Torre Abbey. No sales may be made during the exhibition as it is not a commercial venture and any artwork sold must only be done so privately without any association to the exhibition or its organizers. The exhibition and organizers wave any responsibility to damage or loss of artwork caused before, during and after the event.
Yours Sincerely James Derwin (Artist Curator)
