HUDDERSFIELD CARNIVAL AWARDED £14,500 FOR COSTUME DESIGN & MAKE
Huddersfield Carnival Management Committee has been successful in receiving a £14,500 share of a £90,000 grant from Historic England as part of the Huddersfield High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) to create and deliver community-led cultural activities on the high street over the next three years.
A large costume and 20 dance costumes on the theme of Rugby League will be created by a professional Carnival Arts Practitioner – Kamal Alaoui. With the help of Huddersfield Mas Bands and student placements from the University of Huddersfield Costume and Textile degree the costumes will be built in one of the Temporary Contemporary units on the Piazza.
Although Huddersfield Carnival will be online again this year on Saturday 10th July 2021, the project is match funded by Arts Council England to build the artistry of the carnival and keep the vibe alive for 2022.
The bands will show the finished costumes and dance as part of the activities in St George’s Square in September 2020 as well as appear at Leeds West Indian Carnival King and Queen Show. They are supported by Huddersfield Giants and when COVID regulations permit will appear at a home game. Fingers are crossed for an appearance at the Rugby World Cup events at the John Smith Stadium.
A second large costume and dance costumes on the theme of “Arrivals” will be created in 2022 to take part in the Huddersfield Carnival parade as it returns to its home in Greenhead Park on carnival weekend.
