Elijah
Mendelssohn wrote this vividly dramatic oratorio for the Birmingham Festival and personally conducted its highly successful premiere in 1846, which included a total of eight encores! Drawing its text from the bible, Elijah tells the story of one of the fiercest prophets of the Old Testament.
Whilst Mendelssohn admired Handel and Bach, he combined Baroque influences with innovative elements, prioritising dramatic action and using harmonic language and lyricism characteristic of the Romantic era. Join us for an HCS performance of this beautiful music, featuring once again Serafine Sinfonia and professional soloists.
