Between Weathers
Between Weathers brings together three artists who have worked together for more than a decade. Anne Scarratt, Margaret Deans and Christine Linfield have put together a new collection of works for their second exhibition at Harbour House.
Their work explores their different responses to the changing landscape of coast and moor, from Scilly to the Shetlands. As the artists travel and paint together, it is inevitable that there is some interaction between the paintings, although each artist has a clear and individual style
The paintings shown here are in watercolour, acrylic, mixed media and oil, as well as monotypes and collagraphs.
Margaret Deans lives in West Cornwall where the land meets the sea, and the light changes constantly. "Colour is my primary focus, and I am exploring levels of abstraction. It seems that I get nearer to the essence of a place if I leave something unsaid." Margaret often completes her work on site and incorporates local materials to add texture. She enjoys allowing the paint to move and recombine in new ways she explores the relationships between colour, light and abstraction. Sometimes she takes her initial works into the studio to work on multi-layered images.
Christine Linfield lives and works on Dartmoor, her inspiration coming from the land, the sea and constantly shifting weather patterns - the more elemental the better. Wherever possible she works on site, using thick oil or acrylic paint and layering, removing and relayering, using not only brushes and palette knives but bits of stick, rag and her fingers. "For me it is about my response to the landscape. I often feel that I paint what I struggle to say."
Anne Scarratt lives in the South Hams, and her interest in geology informs the textures of her work. Having spent her working life as an architect, with pencil in hand, Anne now builds her work from sketchbook studies, often carried out perched on a windy cliff, enjoying the privilege of being part of the landscape. "I work with knives and brushes, with sticks and found objects, mud and sand, as well as with paint, exploring different techniques to capture my interpretation of memorable places."
