Erin Walcon Drama Educator
As part of the core team behind Doorstep Arts, Artistic Director for Devon Youth Theatre, and an Associate Research Fellow at the University of Exeter drama department, Erin's work focuses on young people's participatory performance, dialogue, and theatre-making as a space to cultivate community.
Currently, Erin is serving as a postdoctoral researcher on the AHRC-funded national research project, 'Amateur Dramatics: Crafting Communities in Time and Space'. This research is led by Helen Nicholson (Royal Holloway), Jane Milling (Exeter) and Nadine Holdsworth (Warwick), and is the first major research project to look at the field of Amateur Dramatics. Erin has also served as a co-investigator in the Qualitative and Ethnographic Research Network, as a dialogue facilitator in various participatory projects in league with Tom Wakeford at the University of Edinburgh, and as an archivist for the Northcott Theatre, sifting through previously un-sorted records. This archival research can be seen at: http://northcottarchive.wordpress.com/.
Erin's PhD was completed at the University of Exeter in 2013. This Participatory Action Research, titled 'Vital Spaces/Vital Signs: Young People, Performance, Identity and Dialogue' was conducted over three years, and worked within devised theatre spaces to cultivate dialogue between young people and those in positions of power and authority. For more about this research, please refer to to http://vitalspaces.wordpress.com/.
Erin also serves as the Artistic Director of Devon Youth Theatre, a county-wide outreach project run by DAISI, serving young people aged 13-19 across Devon. The ongoing work of DYT aims to put young people's ownership at the heart of all the artistic work. For more about this, see DAISI's website: http://www.daisi.org.uk.
