We Stand Together
To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2020, join 6 Million+ and the six giant Weeping Sisters for We Stand Together, a free event to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides.
Since December 2019, 6 Million+ have welcomed local people, including refugees, to Brigantia for Hold Them Close, a workshop to design and make a 12ft Weeping Sister. This year, the group have created a Weeping Sister to represent a German mother from the 1930s. The figure is mourning the death of her disabled child, to remember that the first victims of mass murder under the Nazi regime were disabled children.
This figure will be joined by five other Weeping Sisters, which were made in previous years by community groups working with 6 million+. These figures represent Jewish, Kurdish, Bosnian, Roma and Burundian women.
At 6.30pm, the six Weeping Sisters will gather outside Dewsbury Town Hall.
Following this, the commemoration event inside Dewsbury Town Hall will begin at 7pm, featuring moving contributions from local schools, faith and community groups, as well as Leisel Carter, a survivor of the Holocaust.
Holocaust Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance for the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 on Monday 27th January marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau death and concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. This was the biggest and best known of the Nazi camps where 1.1 million Jews were killed.
Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 also marks the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
