Speakers’ Corner: A Living Wage

SPOKEN WORD / Poetry workshop (free lunch provided)

Have you heard about the McDonald’s workers striking over pay? How about the debates over zero-hour contracts?

Did you know that one of the first advocates of a fair wage for workers was from Dewsbury?

This spoken word writing workshop hosted by writer Tamsin Cook will explore how the idea of ensuring workers receive a fair living wage is as relevant today as it was in Victorian Britain. We will look back to 1894, when Dewsbury MP Sir Mark Oldroyd first made a landmark speech at Pioneer House calling for a decent living wage:

“A living wage must be sufficient to maintain the worker in the highest state of industrial efficiency, with decent surroundings and sufficient leisure” Oldroyd, 1894

Tamsin Cook will help you to develop a spoken word piece in response. With the chance to practice and develop your performance skills and the opportunity to commit your spoken word piece to video. Recordings may be shared via social media throughout European Local Democracy Week.

Minimum age for workshop: 12 years. Suitable for all levels of experience from beginner to accomplished writer.
