The Sir George Martin Trust funding - Deadline April 2017
The Sir George Martin Trust tends to support small – medium sized local charities which strive to improve the lives of the people they work with. The trustees prefer to make one-off grants available for capital rather than revenue needs or projects, and grants are generally in the £500 – £5,000 region.
The Trust was formed in 1956 by the late Sir George Martin – a prominent Leeds business man and civic figure who became the Lord Mayor of Leeds and High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Sir George’s nephew, Peter Marshall O.B.E., ran the trust from 1976 – 2012 and his daughter-in-law Carla Marshall is now the Trust Manager.
The Trustees meet in March, July and November, but applications should be received at least two months before each meeting. Applicants are expected to show what other sources of funding have been sought and secured. Next deadline for applications is April 2017 for consideration in July 2017.
Eligible organisations must have charitable status and be located in West or North Yorkshire. If the charity is located in another part of the UK, the project or programme must be focused on improving the lives of people residing in West and/or North Yorkshire.
The Sir George Martin Trust supports projects in a number of categories:
•Children and young people
•Church appeals – church outreach only
•Countryside, environment, green issues
•Hospices
•Mental well-being
•Museums and historic buildings
•Music and the arts
•Older people
•Physical and learning disabilities
•Schools, education, universities – must be outreach work
•Social welfare
•Sports for disadvantaged communities
The following are not supported:
•Appeals that are not focused on West and/or North Yorkshire
•Appeals from individuals seeking grants
•Applications from overseas
•Overseas seminars or exchange visits by individuals or groups
•Medical appeals of a capital or revenue nature
•Medical research projects
•Restoration schemes of church roofs, spires, etc
•Playgroups
The Trust prefers to make one-off grants available for capital rather than revenue needs or projects. Grants are generally in the £500 – £5,000 region.
The Trustees have adopted the above guidelines, which follow this broad basis and will, in general, follow these guidelines, although in exceptional circumstances the trustees may deviate from them if a particular cause is of special merit.
Please email info@sirgeorgemartintrust.org.uk or telephone 01423 810 222 and our Trust Manager will send you our brief application form. We recommend making initial contact with our Trust Manager 2-3 months before each meeting. If an application meets the Trust’s initial criteria, our Trust Manager will be in touch to arrange a telephone call or visit in order for her to find out further information on the project. Each application and the Trust Manager’s report will then be reviewed by our six Trustees.
Please don’t hesitate to contact our Trust Manager, Carla Marshall, if you have any questions. Our contact details are:
