Community Engagement Artist for Park Gate, Skelmanthorpe

Community Engagement Artist for Park Gate, Skelmanthorpe

Kirklees Council and Denby Dale Parish Council are working together to develop plans for landscape and biodiversity improvements at the ex-colliery site off Park Gate in Skelmanthorpe. A master plan for the site has been drawn up following consultation in Autumn 2020.

To build on the master plan and survey the Park Gate project team are looking for a highly imaginative artist(s) with experience in community engagement and outdoor projects to design and lead an engagement programme around developing the site. The team want the artist(s) to facilitate creative ideas about the site, engage the local community in the past history and future developments and develop ideas for possible public artwork features on the site.

The focus in this first stage is to build on the consultation report and engage the local community in using the site, use creativity to initiate conversations with residents about the site and its history, and to come up with ideas for possible artwork features to be developed further that recognise the past heritage and natural environment of the site.

The Park Gate team are therefore looking for an artist(s) who understands the nature of public engagement, collaboration, the outdoor space and its history and can develop design ideas for future features.

The development of ideas and artwork features from the community engagement will be phased as it is likely that there will be a need to fundraise for some of the proposals once they are finalised.

Heritage:
The Park Gate nature area was previously the old screens site for Emley Moor colliery and an important aspect of this project is to recognise this past heritage and the part the site played in the local community. The Park Gate team want the consultation and resulting artwork ideas to reflect and inform visitors about this key aspect of the site’s heritage.
