Community and Volunteering Officer, Rochdale Borough Council

Community and Volunteering Officer, Rochdale Borough Council

Community and Volunteering Officer- Culture & Leisure, Rochdale Council
Contract: Permanent, 30 hours p/w

Rochdale Borough Council, in partnership with Rochdale Development Agency (RDA), is restoring the Grade 1 listed Town Hall, making all the principal ceremonial rooms accessible and freely available for the first time in its 150-year history. Visitor facilities will be upgraded, and local people and visitors engaged in the heritage of the building, town and borough through a comprehensive activity and community engagement programme.

The post holder will lead on the implementation of the Volunteer Strategy, which is an intrinsic part of the Town Hall restoration project.

The post holder will ensure that volunteers fully reflect and represent the diversity of Rochdale’s communities. Working alongside the Heritage Engagement Manager, they will link the project with the community.

The ambition and vision is not only to restore Rochdale Town Hall but to give it back to the people of the Borough, actively involving people in telling their stories as testimony to Rochdale’s manufacturing, entrepreneurial and international trading past and present, the continuity of its civic purpose and philanthropy, and its celebratory communal heritage, creating a shared sense of Rochdalian identity, pride and ownership.

The post holder will work with a range of internal and external partners to devise, deliver, manage and evaluate a range of training and professional development opportunities that volunteers of all ages and abilities can access for free. The post holder will ensure that sustainability is built into these training programmes, and that ‘stepping stone opportunities’ are offered to volunteers via a range of external training and learning providers.

Working with the Heritage Engagement Manager, the post holder will be responsible for devising and delivering an engaging events programme after the Town Hall re-opens in late summer 2023. This programme will be supported by volunteers, and offer a broad range of opportunities for visitors to engage with all aspects of the town hall.
