YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN NEW PEOPLE’S THEATRE COMPANY FOR TORBAY, TEIGNBRIDGE & SOUTH HAMS
Budding amateur actors in Torbay have a chance to tread the boards at the Princess Theatre in March, after a project to establish a new Torquay People’s Theatre Company won funding for a series of public drama workshops at the venue.
So if you have ever fancied having a go at acting, now’s your chance.
Torquay People’s Theatre are offering 60 free places for adults aged 19 and over at three evening drama workshops on March 16, 18 and 30.
New People’s Theatre Company director Jon Croose said the free taster sessions were being run by professional theatre-makers from Devon arts organisation The Common Players, and were open to anyone who fancied having a go and learning about theatre.
Each session would include a warm up, an introduction to drama exercises and a chance to have a go at script work and improvisation, said Jon.
“You don’t have to have any previous experience to take part and the whole point is to have a laugh and learn something new at the same time,” he added.
Jon said the workshops would also give people a chance to join a regular People’s Theatre Company group at the Princess Theatre, with opportunities to perform on the venue’s main stage.
The project is funded by the Well UK Swing Door programme - part of the government’s £20m Transformation Fund scheme to encourage more adults to learn for pleasure, he added.
“Well UK have given us a fantastic opportunity to set up a great new creative project for ordinary people in Torbay. The Princess Theatre have very kindly offered the People’s Theatre a home base and we hope that these workshops are just the start of something big,” said Jon.
Princess Theatre General Manager Wendy Bennett said the project was a new creative partnership between members of the public, the theatre and the Common Players as a supporting community arts organization.
“We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting initiative and are looking forward to opening our doors to all those with a passion for drama from the local community. We hope that this will be the start of a bright future for an adult based drama group at the Princess Theatre,” she said.
The People’s Theatre free drama sessions will run from 7-10pm on March 16, 18 and 30. Places are limited to 20 people per session, one session per person. Anyone interested in signing up should contact the Princess Theatre on 01803 290288. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
