Shoddy Pop-Up Exhibition
An exhibition by disabled artists, named after and inspired by shoddy, has gone on on display in Batley Art Gallery and Library.
Using textiles in their work, the artists have responded to the project’s themes of recycling and re-using, whilst rejecting notions that disabled people are second rate or inferior. Instead, we think that “shoddy” could be used to describe the government’s treatment of disabled people, with cuts to welfare benefits and public services.
The exhibition was first shown in Leeds in April. We are thrilled to be able to show the work in Batley, the place where shoddy was invented in 1813, and that subsequently became the shoddy capital of the world.
The exhibition coincides with Batley Vintage Day (28th May), but will remain on display until 11th June.
