The Thadows Loom & The Sun is Black follows the story of a couple travelling to a remote house at the foot of a mountain. After witnessing an unsettling argument between two strangers they begin to question the nature of themselves and their relationship. Overwatched by a distant, mysterious figure who is always just out of reach, they soon realise not all is as it seems, and their situation, dwarfed by a cataclysmic event set deep in the cosmos, forces them to question the nature of their own reality.
Soon, as if on the event horizon of a black hole, they fall out of time, their lives forgotten.
TheThadowsLoom&TheSunisBlack-ForPOSTThe Thadows Loom & The Sun is Black is a powerful cinematic, performance installation pushing the boundaries of physical storytelling, blurring the lines of what is live and what is recorded. For this presentation there will also be an accompanying performance of music and theatrical techniques used in the creation of the project.
The Thadows Loom And The Sun is Black is being performed as part of A Nation’s Theatre Festival a two-month celebration of theatre from around the UK from April – May 2016. Tickets are now on sale for Friday 27th May at Rich Mix in East London.
Further dates will be announced soon.
Overview of the Project
The Thadows Loom & The Sun is Black is an exploration our fragile relationship with time and how it affects perceptions of ourselves, our connections with each other and of reality itself. If we live without time or its perceived consequences what is left of the nature of us, the Universe and our place in it?
‘The transition between film and real life theatre was exquisite, it worked so perfectly I questioned reality for a few seconds’
Using the power that film has as a medium to deconstruct the unity of time and space at its core, The Thadows Loom & The Sun is Black presents its story as a multi-projection film installation where ‘liveness’ is no longer bound to the presence of real bodies in concrete locations. Utilising a startling combination of digital film, psycho physical theatre, holographic projection, contemporary sound design and visual art; Thadows is a unique performance installation experience.
‘When it ended I shivered. Had very strange dreams for a couple of nights! More!’
The project started its life in 2011 and was developed with the support of Arts Council England, Trestle Theatre Company and a host of international collaborators. It has united fundamental elements of VIDEOfeet’s art practice with theatrical and psychophysical theatre approaches to content creation. This hybridised approach has been used at all levels of production, from the development of projection, practical photography effects and sound design at Trestle Arts Base, St Albans UK, with performance elements developed at Trestle Arts Base and the Au Brana cultural centre France.
‘It felt like a pure combination of both (film and theatre) and worked so incredibly well…fantastic work’
Alongside this the physical construct plays with sound, music and light whilst employing modern techniques such as projection mapping with a forced perspective to create illusions of space and containment, making the audience feel as though they are in an area of vast expanse whilst being in a small space.
This new approach is at the core of the works construction and is now in its final incarnation, a fully mobile touring environment, with a single screen feature Thadows Loom and accompanying music album to be released after its initial tour.
‘To make an audience question if their brain is functioning properly is quite a skill’
A single screen feature Thadows Loom will be released in Spring 2017 with an accompanying music album presenting the aural landscape of Thadows Loom that will be available for download at the same time.
The Thadows Loom & the Sun is Black is available for touring to UK venues, galleries or festivals from Autumn 2016.
